When Clean Drinking Water Becomes a Luxury

An Objective Comparison between UV and RO Water Filters

The privilege of having access to fresh tap water is becoming a luxury in many places around the world. This serious trend is spreading at an unsettling rate and threatening to turn into an even bigger problem in the some of the following seasons or decades. Today’s analytical interpreters of contemporary stirrings predict that the possible wars of the future may exactly be fought for control over water.

The current concerning matter, though, is that our civilization is heavily struck by the shortage or complete absence of properly filtered water, and the means to obtain it. The trouble is not the absence of any water in many places, but the fact that it’s not drinkable at its primary source.

International statistics

Currently, 36 countries in the world that have some form of a water struggle, and a little over third of them face the, so called, extreme baseline water stress. Billions of people (think India) are faced with certain form of water depletion. Some other countries include Cambodia, Ghana, Bangladesh and Afghanistan with less than 20% of population having the benefits of fresh water, for drinking or otherwise.

If we look at the World Resources Institute map of the world and examine the water stress by countries, you’d see than not even the highly developed countries, like Australia, are not in the safe zone. Thankfully, the technology is working hard to keep up with this issue, so we have a number of filtering types, two being the most prominent: ultra violet and reverse osmosis type. Check out how these two compare in the basic terms involving their advantages and shortcomings.

UV filters

Although they look like they’re an unreleased R2D2 model retrieved from the Star Wars universe, they are fairly easy and practical to use for a regular, daily consumption. Their purpose is to battle an array of harmful bacterial cultures and viruses that dwell in our water and quash them.

This filter targets the DNA chain and structure of the microorganisms and thus downgrades the number of hazardous ingredients in the water. By this, they are successfully stopping the reproduction of an array of viral and bacterial entities and purifying the water as a result. They are not chemically reliant and do not alter the regular taste of water. Lastly, the actual apparatus is rather simple to clean and manage. Even you yourself can change the bulbs on your own.

The drawbacks of this filter type is that it is not perfectly effective and all-encompassing. Certain kinds of contaminating substances such as cadmium and lead, as well as a number of other chemicals are not efficiently removed by this technique, despite its other numerous benefits.

RO filters

These filters employ a somewhat more complex method including the osmosis process, that is, the reverse procedure of it, and a unique membrane that captures the pollutants. The filters isolate the contaminants leaving clean water for us. This special method catches not only tiny solid particles, but also plutonium, arsenic and the presence of agricultural chemicals, we learn from Sydney-based experts for water filters. Filter also bans the sugars, salts and a number of bacteria.

The system running on reverse osmosis does show some limitations, the obvious being their price and the inability of constant work. When we put this aside, they are a great all-around solution for the issue of water impurity. After all, when you’re getting a water that’s that good, the operating speed and smaller limitations are not the deal breakers. For example, a regular person or family will not see the effects of it at all on a daily basis

Final showdown

Tending to your wellbeing and considering to invest in a quality water purifier is thoroughly advisable. When it comes to the choice of filters, the decision is hard to make as they both have their setbacks and cannot totally filter the impurities. Ideally, having and combing both of these two filters would produce the best results. However, if your financial situation prevents you from purchasing them both, getting at least one of them is recommended, as they individually provide a decent level of water purity, as well.
